My Song of the Month for June 2025

We're coming to the end of another month, so it's time for me to come out and announce my "Song of the Month" for June: Stuck in My Head by Arcade Fire. It's the final track on their newly released album Pink Elephant. When I first listened to Pink Elephant, I was full of excited anticipation for some for great Arcade Fire music...only to be greatly disappointed as track after track seemed weak and lame.  And then it came down to the very end, and wouldn't you know it, they came through with a big winner.  Singer/songwriter Win Butler gives a passionate performance with cutting lyrics and a robust, fast pace reminding me of the group's much earlier track Rebellion (Lies).  There are no other songs for June that, to me, come anywhere close to Stuck in My Head.  It's also, in my estimation, the "Song of 2025" so far.  Give it a listen and tell me what you think...

My Songs of the Month for February 2025

I didn't listen much to my music channels this past month, but I did hear some songs I liked more than others.  The preferred genre is Indie-Rock, and much of what I liked in January slid over into February.  My favorite song of the month was on January's list: Starburster by the Dublin, Ireland group Fontaines DC.  Number Two on the list was Besties by Black Country, New Road.  And the third favorite is January's song of the month for me, Everyone Out by DIIV...

My Cumulative Running/Walking Race Record Update

I've updated below my cumulative running race record...you can see that since the previous update on December 10th 2023, most of my ventures have been to a single location: Gainesville's pretty Depot Park where, on Saturday mornings, they hold a free 5K race/run/walk called the "Depot Parkrun"...I've covered it 42 times at this writing on May 11, 2024.  I also ran half-marathon and 10-mile races during the intervening weeks.  Races 10K (6.2 miles) or longer I have highlighted in red. Updated Personal Song of the Year List, 1964 to Now

As part of my cross-reference project on this blog, I have below listed my favorite songs of the year from 1964, when I was seven turning eight, up to last year's selection.  For the most part...until 2008...I could just turn on my radio during the year in question and hear my favorites.  After that, I tended to be disillusioned with the supposed talent being pushed on the airwaves and began to use the Internet much more to find "my" music.  So artists like Regina Spektor, Sufjan Stevens, Kasabian, Kerani and Gorillaz, rarely if ever played in our traditional broadcast radio medium, rose in my estimation to premier acts while I basically ignored the "big names" being thrown at me: frankly, I think their music kind of sucks...sorry, Adele, Taylor Swift, Usher, Post Malone, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, etcetera, etcetera.  Doesn't mean you can't like them...to each their own, I say, and my dislike of their music doesn't mean I don't appreciate them as stage performers, which I do.  In any event, I'm using this date on my blog as another cross-reference anchor, on which in future times...starting in December of this year) I'll be extending the list. Quote of the Week...from Cees Nooteboom

Life is a never-ending cross reference.                    ---Cees Nooteboom

Cees Nooteboom is a famous Dutch novelist, essayist, travel book writer and journalist, born in 1933.  I was searching online for quotes about cross referencing and, lo and behold, this dude's name came up...I had never heard of him before.  He writes in his native Dutch and has put out a lot of material.  Unfortunately, I found nothing available of his...in any language...on Libby, the online library resource app.  And my local Alachua County Library only had his 2022 essay book 533 Days, which I checked out (fortunately translated into English).  He achieved renown in Europe but it never did seem to translate into popularity in the U.S., but I liked this and other quotes.  He's also written stuff like "I am a hindrance to the world, and the world is a hindrance to me", "I find it unbearable to need a body in order to exist", and the topper, "I have never cared much for people.  Most of them are cowards, conformists, muddleheads, moneygrubbers, and they infect each other".  As for my selected quote, I have been considering going back in my blog articles and doing something similar to Wikipedia, the ultimate Internet site for cross-referencing.  It's just that I have subject matters, like running, reading, constellations, music, etc., that contain interrelated articles spread over years and with my blog going back to 2007 it can be more convenient and interesting to "connect the dots", so to speak.  On my cumulative running race list that I revised on December 10, 2023 I cross-referenced past articles about each race experience, and I continue to update that article even with races after that date.  I found myself wanting to do the same with the books I read...I think that's probably going to be my next cross-referencing project on this blog...I already have the basic reading list from February 22, 2021 and I just need to add the later books and the cross-referencing links.  As for Cees Nooteboom, I haven't yet read much of his one book to grace my library's shelves, but he does seem to have a pretty sharp sense of humor and insight...

The "Four" and My Imaginary Double Album

Last year Radiohead members Jonny Greenwood and Thom Yorke collaborated with other musicians to form a side project called The Smile and released the album A Light for Attracting Attention.  Unlike with Regina Spektor, whose "next" album I had been waiting for since 2015, this was something unexpected. I bought the CD (along with Regina's new one titled Home, Before and After) and have it in my car, ready for play at a moment's notice.  Of late, I have focused on tracks 1,2, 10 and 11 of the Smile album: The Same, The Opposite, A Hairdryer, and Waving a White Flag...yes, the titles sound a little strange, especially that third one.  That's what I listen to when driving to and from work.  As for what I listen to while working out at home, I turn my TV/Roku on YouTube and play an imaginary "double album" loaded with favorite songs that I think go together: here they are (think how "vinyl" LPs are structured):

I am a creature of routine and habit...I tend to stick to the above order in my listening, go figure.  I put this out here in the blogosphere just in case you, my valued reader, might already know of some these acts and their music or, perhaps might be inspired to give them a listen.  In any case, I got a kick out of writing this...

My #5 All-Time Favorite Album: Superunknown by Soundgarden

In the early 1990s the debate was on about which band was the best in the grunge subgenre of hard rock...was it Nirvana or Pearl Jam? By 1995 the answer was clear to me: neither, it was another Seattle-area band: SOUNDGARDEN, featuring one of the greatest singers ever in rock, Chris Cornell, along with lead guitarist Kim Thayil, drummer Matt Cameron and bassist Ben Shepherd.  In 1994 they released their hallmark SUPERUNKNOWN, now my all-time #5 favorite album. I didn't know it at the time, though, being gradually treated to radio and video releases from it like Spoonman, My Wave, Fell on Black Days and Black Hole Sun.  Spoonman may have been the coolest video ever, My Wave was my "song of the year" for 1995 with its defiant message to meddlers everywhere, and Black Hole Sun...curiously played on radio as an adult contemporary song although it was probably the darkest on the album with a very scary accompanying video...contained the catchy (to me) line "Hang my head, drown my fear, till you all just disappear".  But I was still unaware of the album itself until visiting my sister Anita in 1994 and noting that my musically inclined nephew Greg owned a copy.  But even then, I wouldn't have heard it except for a quirky twist of fate: a couple of years later, while listening to one of Gainesville's more obscure AM radio stations (on 1390 kHz) play a succession of Doors albums in their entirety, suddenly they started playing Superunknown instead.  Buying the album, I took to it quickly...especially the first eight tracks...and have never looked back.  Superunknown is definitely Soundgarden's best work, combining a generally connected musical thread of their instrumental and singing styles along with some really complex arrangements to form something that they could never hope to match again.  But that's all right: the band came through with this one!  Along with the others are two deep tracks that resonated with me: Mailman and Fresh Tendrils...definitely NOT adult contemporary material.  The original album contained fifteen tracks...some later editions added another song, She Likes Surprises, at the end although I don't think it fit the album.  Superunknown bluntly discusses topics like death, depression, drug abuse and social disaffection, so it may seem a little over the top or disturbing to you...make your own choices, I say. My #7 All-Time Favorite Album: The White Album by the Beatles

The 1968 double album THE BEATLES, more commonly referred to as "THE WHITE ALBUM" due to its packaging, is my all-time #7 favorite album.  The Fab Four composed much of the music here while on an Indian retreat and, while the recording reflected a much more individualist approach to the Beatles' music-making then their previous, more team-oriented efforts, the overall effect...and this may have had a lot to do with their incredibly talented producer George Martin...was a surprisingly cohesive work, especially considering its length and number of tracks.  I wouldn't hear the entirety of this album until four years later in the fall of 1972 when a buddy of mine lent me his copy...I bought one for myself soon thereafter.  For an album with such a name, The White Album was easily the band's darkest work and should have been named "The Black Album"...it dovetailed perfectly with the personal period of prolonged adolescent depression I was undergoing at the time (especially the contributions from George Harrison and John Lennon).  The album also was loaded with "clues" about the "Paul McCartney is dead" conspiracy theory floating around at the time, and I would listen intently to the most suspicious track, Revolution 9, for hidden messages buried beneath the wall of noise in it.  That was the longest "song" on the album although it was more an abstract audio collage created together by John and his newfound love Yoko Ono.  Some of the tracks I knew from the late '60s like Blackbird (covered by the Brazilian group Bossa Rio) and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, a Beatle-ized reggae tribute. And I much preferred the "fast" Revolution that was the flip side to Hey Jude to the album's slower Revolution 1.  Good Night, written by John for his son Julian, was sung by Ringo Starr, his greatest ever vocal performance in my opinion.  Below are my own personal rankings of the thirty tracks...in their own ways they were all good...
