Going to Beach with Melissa Today

This morning would be the birthday of my late father and son.  Daddy would be turning 100 while Will would be 36.  Melissa and I are planning to stay overnight at a Daytona Beach Hampton Inn and then return home Monday.  After Saturday's double-lap walk through Depot Park, I got up early, around 4:30, and did ten minutes of running in place on the living room rug floor before brewing some coffee and writing this. Earlier yesterday evening I listened some more to a library audiobook about running and the first chapter of an annoying Hardy Boys adventure story...it reminded me of an old South Park episode titled "Mystery of the Urinal Deuce" when the gay lads keep "getting a clue" You know,  Joe and Hardy each sound like their privileged brothers, the only missing words being their "clues"that no one ever holds them accountable for . Later this morning, Melissa and I have a reservatioto at a Daytona Beach hotel, where we hope to enjoy the ambience of our room balcony and the poolside.  It sure would be nice to recover some walking and running fitness on that sandy beach, too.  The beach looks like the perfect location to practice running softly.

At Depot Parkrun Today, Melissa and I Show Up and Walk a Lap

My total virtual miles for today: 7.0. Melissa, who felt sore this morning, still drove me on down to Depot Park for their Parkrun.  After the first .7-mile lap, though, we agreed to end it for this week.Throughout today's event, I felt out of shape.  Later today I was up for a brisk walk around our block, and exercised while watching some YouTube. We're planning on going to the beach on Sunday, so we'll see how that goes. Writing blog articles on this Chromebook has become very frustrating for me because the keyboard has become almost impossible to type on.. it's probably time for a new computer with a decent keyboard...

Back from Visit to Daytona Beach, Which Has Deteriorated Considerably

It's Monday afternoon and Melissa and I just returned to Gainesville from a two-night stay at Daytona Beach.  It was a good time for us, but I was more than a little dismayed by the deterioration of the beach.  There was almost no sand, and the level of the beach was around two feet lower, causing the ocean to come crashing against the walls for most of the tidal cycle.  The stairway access from our hotel to the beach was blocked since the stairs themselves were damaged from the tidal onslaught...we had to walk a distance down the street to find the next nearest beach access.  Apparently, this all came to pass a couple of years ago when a hurricane washed away the beach sand...now the ground there is hard and rarely dry.  We still enjoyed our stay, but I also noted that it seemed that virtually every hotel or condo on the ocean side of A1A had some extent of construction work going on the property, often with piles of building and electrical material just sitting out in the open...very ugly looking.  It was a little depressing seeing how this once thriving tourist community, once known for its beach that cars could drive down, had come so far down in such a short time.  One of the hotels we would often stay at in Ormond Beach seemed to be permanently shut down.  Looks as if we're going to be exploring a new place to stay on our next visit.  Hopefully the politicians will see the value of sand restoration and fund building the beach back up again.  As of now, you have to wait until low tide to walk down the beach and even then it's ugly, with rocks and debris strewn over its surface...

Our Weekend Beach Visit

Melissa and I enjoyed our outing to Daytona Beach this weekend...we just got back into Gainesville.  There didn't seem to be very many people out there, and that suited us just fine.  The beach was fine for walking, and the swimming pool at our hotel was usually empty and we used it during our brief stay.  I'd like to say it's nice to be back, but frankly I'd rather be extending my stay over there...

Enjoyed Brief Daytona Beach Outing with Melissa

Yesterday Melissa and I paid an overnight visit to our favorite hotel in Daytona Beach, staying overnight and coming back to Gainesville this afternoon.  Although it was rather brief for both of us, we enjoyed being there...Melissa will be undergoing her first cycle of medical therapy later this week and it was good to be able to enjoy some good times at the beach.  Unfortunately, the weather didn't seem to want to cooperate with us as it was, even for this time of year, exceptionally muggy and uncomfortable as we sat on our high balcony looking out over the pool and beach.  No problem: we ratcheted up the room's air conditioner and kept the curtains open for our oceanfront view.  And now, onward to the week ahead...
