Martinus Evans wants us to come on out, feel it,and declare openly, "I am a runner!", even if we're a bit reticent on signing up and taking part in races. I remember how I would use our spacious back yard to design feasible, relatively flat running paths in order to enhance my endurance. After 2009, i would get home from work. Rebecca and Will, at home, greeted me. but then I'd dress up for a short night run and then go out and tackle it...I did this more or less regularly for several days. Then, in 2016 after David Bowie's passing in January from liver cancer, I rediscovered his vast catalogue of excellent music and put past albums I liked on my mp3 player. Then I'd go out into our back yard and spend time (and dry-hacking) running back and forth for months, thoroughly unpleasant from my irritated throat and esophagus but still able to cover the longer runs (and enjoying David's musical treasures). And now here we come to mid-spring 2026 and the back yard is now even more open and available. I'm still struggling to regain my running endurance after surgery and some cancer treatment, and I've found a champion in Martinus Evans, who has informed and encouraged me through his recent book that I just checked out from my public library...and the audiobook version on their Libby app. Now that I've finally recovered enough to finish a Depot Parkrun 5K and get scanned and posted online, it's time for me to reclaim my identity as a runner. Running a little during the day will doubtless challenge me, but my intention at this stage is to wear the good Brooks running shoes I've been using and jog on the uneven grass, challenging my mind and body to grow. Then once Saturday morning rolls around again...it'll be May 2nd...I can strive to maintain progress walking the Depot Parkrun 5K course, throwing in some small jogging stretches at the end. The worst case scenario? I'll poop out during the race and have to cut it short. But now I think it's a foregone conclusion that I'm a runner.I'm back in business with my early morning rising, coffee brewing, home exercise and blog writing. Now it's time to return to the back of the house and rile up sweet Peewee Daisy (who wants to get riled up) after I flick on the air conditioning...

Showed Up, Trudged a Lap at Today's Depot Parkrun 5K
This morning, as almost always, I awoke hours before sunrise. I put on some coffee and did some floor exercise on the living room rug, this time running in place for seven minutes. Between six and seven I managed to talk my sweet Melissa into driving me over to Depot Park to be in time for their weekly race, involving four laps around that park just south of downtown, Gainesville. I didn't feel up to the task but had decided beforehand to just attempt a slow one-lap, about .7 mile. Well, she didn't feel good and remained in the car. It was a grueling, punishing experience, walking that lap, and I felt my struggling, slow feet with their Brooks running shoes were hitting the asphalt too abruptly as if I were kicking into it. I got through it feeling pretty crappy and angry, not at all happy with the social tribalism at the park. Melissa was very positive and congratulated me on my efforts. It's now mid-afternoon and I've recovered to the point that I think I could stand a little more exercise before resting for the remainder of the day. No official result for me...I did it in 24 minutes. Maybe next Saturday I'll try it again, if signs indicate a "go" for me. I have no plans to push myself hard, though. Tomorrow marks Rebecca's first wedding anniversary...love you, Sweetheart.
This month, today excepted, I totally skipped out on Parkruns, confining my exercise to the living room and always enjoying indoors climate control. Running in place in socks (ipf) and rock-running (rr) were the two exercises I did, and I was careful to write down my times spent doing them. I rested a lot and was careful not to overdo things. If God permits and circumstances allow it, I plan to gradually increase my time and efforts in this direction. And may future Parkruns go much better for both of us. Yes, that one lap was indeed a "victory lap"...

Snug-Fitting Old Brooks Shoes Seem to Improve Walking
Today on my neighborhood 3.3-mile loop speed walk, I tried wearing my older Brooks running shoes that fit my feet more snugly than the pair I had been wearing regularly. I seemed to be able to pick up my walking pace with the old shoes, and it may well be because my feet are tighter in them, not moving around wasting energy with each contact on the road surface. If I walk this coming Saturday's Depot Parkrun, I plan to use the old Brooks for it and see if I can't bring down my finishing time. Should be interesting. In any event, I plan to ask around for advice about who can give me authoritative pointers on race-walking form and evaluate what I'm doing wrong or right with it. I sincerely believe that endurance speed-walking can well be the way to go with my advancing years as I am intent on maintaining high-functioning mobility, as athletically as possible. I know the non-profit Florida Track Club, of which I am a member, has an auxiliary, commercial "Team" Florida Track Club that offers (for various fees) coaching and advice...and I believe that race walking is covered in it somewhere. In today's digital information world, it seems that it shouldn't be all that hard to get some sound coaching with my speed-walking...
