Just Finished Reading Captain's Fury by Jim Butcher

Jim Butcher's 2007 novel Captain's Fury is the fourth of sixth in his Codex Alera fantasy series.  Protagonists Tavi, Amara, and Isana each go through extreme peril and personal relational trials...I'm tempted to say more but realize that in simply stating their survival up to this point in the series, I'm giving some of it away as there is an awful lot of killing going on here.  If constantly bloody, gory warfare and fighting is your idea of a good fantasy series, you'll definitely approve of this one.  The humans this time around are fighting against each other as usual, as well as against the Canim, a savage wolf-like species from across the ocean...Tavi, who has grown into a young man of extraordinary fighting and commanding abilities, has a plan to forestall them completely wiping out humanity on this world.  The magic in this series has primarily to do with the harnessing of energy from natural sources like wind, water, wood, fire, earth, and stone: furycrafting.  People are born with potentials in this area that they are trained for...technology, as in your typical fantasy series...has never progressed to steam, electricity, or firearms applications and is thus always in a medieval, preindustrial state with autocrats subjugating the masses and militarism, famine and slavery commonplace.  In other words, a pretty miserable, nasty place that no one would wish on their worst enemies...I can't wait to get through with this series!  Still, it's well written and you are entitled to your own tastes in fiction: maybe you'll like it, who knows.  The next and fifth book, which I'll be starting soon, is Princep's  Fury...
